Event report: SIAA and NLGN roundtable on ‘The Social Value Act: Implications for Local Government’

by The SIAA team

On 3rd July 2012, SIAA and the New Local Government Network (NLGN) jointly hosted a breakfast roundtable on the implications of the UK’s new Social Value Act for local government. The breakfast was held at NLGN’s offices in central London.

With the UK’s Public Services (Social Value) Act likely to come into law in early 2013, demonstrating value is now a key issue for local government and other bodies. While some local authorities around the UK have already pioneered social value-led approaches to commissioning, most commissioning practices do not have the means and tools to fully consider thewider social benefits other potential providers can bring to the table.

SIAA and NLGN’s breakfast event explored the practical changes local government will be required to make to their commissioning processes, and also considered how ‘social value’ will be evidenced. What will be the baseline for commissioners under the new Act and what are the implications for new entrants and the third sector?
