Martin Brookes, Economist, Fulcrum Asset Management and SIAA Trustee
Martin was Chief Executive of New Philanthropy Capital from April 2008 to July 2011, having previously held the position of Director of Research. In 2009, Martin co-founded a new charity, Pro Bono Economics, which pairs charities with economists. Prior to joining NPC, Martin was a senior economist at Goldman Sachs International from 1994 to 2001 and, before that, an economist at the Bank of England.
Dan Corry, Chief Executive, New Philanthropy Capital
Dan joined NPC as Chief Executive in October 2011, following a varied career in public policy and economics. Dan was Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit and Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister on the Economy from 2007 to 2010. He has been Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Treasury and has worked in the Education Department as well as at DTI and DCLG. Most recently he was a Director in the Economics segment of FTI Consulting. In addition to working at senior levels of government, Dan ran the New Local Government Network think tank between 2002 and 2005 and was Senior Economist at the IPPR in the 1990s.
Sir Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive, National Council for Voluntary Organisations (Keynote)
Sir Stuart Etherington was appointed Chief Executive of NCVO in 1994, and previously was Chief Executive of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People. Currently, Stuart is Pro-Chancellor of Greenwich University and a Council Member of the Institute of Employment Studies. He is also an Advisory Group member for the Policy Centre at the British Academy and also for the Lord Mayor’s Trust Initiative. As well as being a leading commentator, Sir Stuart is a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union. His Government appointments have included the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit and the Cabinet Office Performance and Innovation Unit’s Advisory Board on the Voluntary Sector, and he has also served on the HM Treasury’s Cross Cutting Review on the role of the Voluntary Sector. Stuart was knighted in 2010 for services to the voluntary sector.
Michael Green, co-author, Philanthrocapitalism
Michael Green is an economist and writer. He is the co-author, with Matthew Bishop of ‘The Economist’, of Philanthrocapitalism: how giving can save the world and The Road From Ruin: a new capitalism for a big society. Michael was formerly a senior official at the Department for International Development where he was an economic adviser and served three secretaries of state as head of communications. He is an adviser to the ‘Nexters’ and ‘Spring’ projects of the Big Society Network, is a regular media commentator on economic issues, and blogs at www.philanthrocapitalism.net. Michael goes by the name @shepleygreen on Twitter.
Caroline Hartnell, Executive Director, Alliance Publishing Trust
Caroline Hartnell is the editor of Alliance magazine and executive director of Alliance Publishing Trust. Alliance is a quarterly magazine focusing on philanthropy and social investment across the world. She has been the editor of Alliance since 1998. Before that Caroline worked as a freelance editor for a variety of non-profit and commercial publishers and carried out editing training.
Stevie Johnston, Interaction Institute for Social Change (Facilitator)
Stevie Johnston is a Senior Associate with the Interaction Institute for Social Change, a not-for-profit organisation which works with the social and public sectors to strengthen civil society and build social capital. It provides facilitation and training with a focus on building collaborative initiatives. Previously he was Director of the Workers’ Educational Association in Northern Ireland and has worked for a European Poverty Programme and as a community organiser in West Belfast.
Darin McKeever, Deputy Director, Charitable Sector, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Darin McKeever is Deputy Director of the Charitable Sector at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he leads the foundation’s charitable sector work. Darin serves as an ambassador for the foundation within the charitable community — managing the foundation’s relationships and grants with associations, advocacy organizations, and research institutions with interests in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector as a whole. Darin also monitors policy developments affecting the sector for the foundation. Prior to joining the foundation, Darin was the executive director and co-founder of Heads Up, a Washington, DC-based provider of academic and enrichment programs which help young people develop the skills, confidence, and relationships to succeed in school and to pursue lives that help further social change. For his efforts launching and leading the organization, Darin was awarded the Echoing Green and Stride Rite Community Service Fellowships.
Jeremy Nicholls, Chief Executive, SROI Network UK and SIAA Trustee
Jeremy Nicholls became the Chief Executive of the Social Return on Investment (SROI) Network UK in 2008. He started his working life as a chartered accountant in the UK. He has also lived and worked in Tanzania, Liberia and briefly Nicaragua. His work has increasingly focused on understanding and managing the value of the impact of organisation’s activities. He wrote There is no business like Social Business with Liam Black and co-wrote the UK Government supported Guide to SROI. In addition to being a trustee of SIAA, he is the chair of FairPensions, a director of the FRC Group — a social business based in Liverpool — and a director of Social Evaluator, an online platform for the analysis of social returns.
Rob Owen, Chief Executive, St. Giles Trust
Rob Owen is Chief Executive of St Giles Trust, a multi-award winning charity that helps break the cycle of re-offending. The cornerstone of St Giles services is their innovative use of trained ex-offenders who use their first hand experiences to provide services to others. St Giles Trust was recently voted Britain’s Most Innovative Charity, as well as being a Charity of the Year award winner, a Sunday Times Best 100 Companies to work for winner and excitingly the first organisation to deliver the upcoming ‘Social Impact Bond’. Previously Rob was an investment banker working in London, New York and Tokyo. He has led multiple arctic and high altitude expeditions raising money for charity and is a published author on the subject of sports sponsorship.
Andreas Rickert, Chief Executive, Phineo and SIAA Trustee
Dr. Andreas Rickert became the CEO of PHINEO in December 2009. Prior to initiating PHINEO, Andreas served as Director at Bertelsmann Stiftung for two years and was responsible for its projects relating to the third sector and promoting civil society. From 2004 to 2008 Andreas worked as project manager with McKinsey and Company where his focus was on public sector and healthcare industry in Europe and the Middle East. Andreas did his PhD in molecular genetics at the Max-Planck-Institute in Cologne and the Stanford University in Palo Alto.
